Slow Down To Speed Up
I had a running coach once. She looked the part. Toned and fit and full of vitality. I was a burnt out 30 something trying to carve out some time for me and get my health on track. I was running a fledgling business, presenting on 3 tv shows and dating endlessly.
When we went out for runs my coach would tell me to slow down. “What? She has to be joking” I thought. I’m barely moving as it is, if I go any slower I’ll be walking. But each time she would do the same thing; running right beside me she would wave her hand in a push back motion next to me indicating for me to slow down and I would. We worked together over 20 sessions and I recall her doing that every time we went out.
The strangest thing happened though. Over time, I got faster and I went farther until one day, I had run my first 10k without even realising it and felt great at the end.
Her gentle hand signal has stayed with me. It showed up again in my business life. I noticed that every time I took a step back and slowed down, I got clarity, I got help and progress felt like it came quicker, easier and more sustainably afterwards.
I took time out of travelling up and down when I had my son and worked from home for 3 months. We signed our biggest client and began a long lasting relationship with them from that period onwards. I moved house and county and took 3 months off to settle myself and the family in, we figured out what to say no to and how to increase our revenue during that period, without adding extra work.
I am in the midst of launching several new projects right now and everything is starting to speed up. I feel my coaches hand signal and I am reminded to slow down to speed up.
What does that actually mean right now?
For me it means, saying no to more things.
Clearing my calendar and leaving empty space and time to think.
Throwing things out and whittling down so there is less busyness around me.
Walking slower,
Breathing slower,
Talking slower.
Try it. It’s life changing. Slow down to speed up.
Love always
